Licence

Elastic License 2.0, source available. It costs 10 euro, and nothing is locked, limited or switched off if you do not pay. Two things you may not do, and both are about that arrangement.

What you may do

  • Use it on as many Macs as you like, at home or at work, without paying anything.
  • Read the source, change it, build your own copy.
  • Pass it on, as long as these terms travel with it.

What you may not do

  • Offer it to other people as a hosted or managed service that gives them a substantial part of what this app does.
  • Move, change, disable or work around the licence key handling, or strip out the reminder a key silences. That limitation is the reason this licence was chosen rather than a more familiar one: it names the one thing that would break the arrangement.
  • Remove or obscure the licence and copyright notices.

There is no warranty. If it breaks a machine, that is on you, which is worth reading twice for software that reconfigures displays through an interface Apple does not document.

Source available, not open source

Worth stating rather than blurring. The Open Source Definition does not permit restrictions of this kind, so calling this open source would be wrong, however good it sounds. The source is there to be read, checked and built. It is not a grant to repackage the app with the request taken out.

What it costs, and how to get a key

Whatever it is worth to you. 10 euro is the suggested amount, and it is a suggestion rather than a price: nothing checks whether anything arrived, and nothing can. Naming a number is there to save you the question "how much is reasonable", which is the question that most often ends in nothing being sent at all.

  • Nothing at all for the first thirty days. Somebody deciding whether this is useful should not be interrupted while deciding.
  • After that, once every thirty days, it asks whether it has been worth anything. Not per launch, not per week. A reminder that appears constantly is not a reminder, it is a reason to stop using the software.
  • A key stops the asking, permanently. That is the only thing a key does. No feature is behind one, nothing expires, no limit is lifted.
  • Nothing is checked over the network. The key is verified on your own Mac against a number inside the app. No account, no activation, no server, and no way for anyone here to know whether you entered one.

The Support tab in Settings carries the addresses a contribution can go to, each with a button that copies it. Send the transaction reference to support@moredisplays.com and a key comes back. Type it into the same tab and the app stops asking.

A key looks like MD-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX. The alphabet leaves out I, L, O and U so nothing in one can be misread as a digit down a telephone, and the check folds those characters back in if you type them anyway. Spaces, dashes and lower case are all forgiven.

Third party code

The app has no third party runtime dependencies at all. The one that was permitted, an update framework, turned out not to be needed: the updater is a few hundred lines that ask this site what it is offering, check the download against the published checksum, and then make macOS confirm the signature and the notarisation before anything goes near your Applications folder.

Nothing is copied into this project, so this licence covers the whole of it. Every reference that was read is recorded in ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS.md in the source tree.
